Supporting Artist: Duncan Geere performing a piece based on The Carrington Event where he transforms data from the fiercest solar storm ever recorded into a live auditory experience. This storm, which struck Earth in 1859 and was named for astronomer Richard Carrington, wreaked havoc on telegraph systems, started fires, and made auroras visible as far south as the Caribbean. Today, a storm of this scale could inflict trillions of dollars of damage and it would take up to a decade for society to recover. In this performance, Duncan Geere (from the Loud Numbers data sonification studio) uses guitar and modular synthesisers to audibly represent the violent disruption that the Carrington Event caused to the Earth’s magnetic field.
