Oj...!It does use the same CEM chips as the Evo stuff, but they sound different because Dave tweaked them differently, and the system isn't the same without the digital stuff in the signal path.
I think you'll be surprised. I sure was...
dB
DSI
This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.
aha. I stand corrected
Andy_X69 wrote: Will it have multitimbrality?
Dave Bryce: No. Just split and layer.
Är ruskigt sugen på att sen en bild på denThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.
This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.
Helt plötsligt verkade Alesis Andromeda lite intressantare...
Jag hör in allt direkt efter jag spelat in det på MIDI.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.

"...the modulators... they're software. The signal path is all analog."This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.
"one question
are the oscillators DCO?"
Yes.
"I thought the evo's oscillators couldn't touch the sound of the prophet 5, 600's oscillators as far as raw fatness. I will cry if the new p8 oscillators aren't fat enough sounding (like the evo's IMHO)"
As I mentioned - they're tweaked differently and sound different than the Evo's oscs - fairly noticeably, I think. IIRC, Dave messed with the Oscillator Slop parameter a bit as well.
You'll be able to hear them for yourself soon enough. That'll be the only test that really matters....
ang multitimbral:
"Most every synth made today is quite physically capable of handling multitimbral mode; it's just he software that limits it."
"That's not true for analog synths. If you want to make it multitimbral, you have to add a whole set of CV output circuits for each part. So, let's say, that you have a polysynth with 32 voltage controlled parameters. If it's monotimbral, you have to build 32 S&H cells, but let's say, that you want to make it 8-part - then you need 8x32 of them. In case of modern analog polys, it's hardware problem, because dynamic voice allocation is just adding few lines to key assigner - and modern CPUs are fast enough to handle it, and update patch data quickly, but adding another CV outputs topatch memory board may be difficult and expensive. "
This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.

"Regarding photos... The early prototype I have looks WAY different than the production model. There IS a rather nice photo of a later prototype, which looks much closer to a production model, but I don't have permission to post it yet. Dave took home the first production model just a few days ago, and I don't know if he has any photos of that yet.
So, in the meantime, I can only tell you that I think it's gorgeous. It's relatively small, with a 61 note keyboard, pitch/mod wheels above the keyboard for shorter width, and it's not too deep, and not too heavy - all of which makes it very portable (like the other DSI synths, though, it's built like a tank). The front panel is much like the original Prophet 5 - all black background, with white lines and labeling, red LEDs, red LCD display, and black knobs with silver bevel on top. Classic. Front panel design is in keeping with the general layout found on the PEK and MEK (i.e. the front panel is largely an intuitive signal flow diagram), of which I was proud to have contributed. Very pretty real wood end cheeks. It's definitely a "looker" and a "keeper". And yeah, I just love the sound."
"I probably shouldn't admit this, but prior to getting the P8 prototype and spending some time with it, I wasn't overly excited about this synth. I really looked at it as nothing more than a subset of the Evolver, albeit one with 8 note polyphony. I expected to program maybe a half bank of sounds (64) before running out of ideas and enthusiasm. I expected there would be no remorse when it came time to send the prototype back to Dave, and no plans to put one in my rig.
I ended up being very wrong.
Despite the similarity in hardware, it sounds different than the analog side of the Evolver, especially in context (as opposed to comparisons of single notes). Granted, there are no D/A and A/D converters in the P8, and the envelopes are different, and the oscillators are a tiny bit different, but still... the sound was a nice surprise. Of course, without the delays, distortion, feedback, etc. of the Evolver, you tend to focus more on simpler, cleaner sounds anyway. That said, the P8 does have a few tricks to make the sound pretty knarly if you like, including osc (audio) frequency modulation of the LPF. Pair that with hard osc sync, and maybe a little noise modulation of osc frequency (or just about anything else), and things can get pretty nasty, albeit in an analog sort of way.
The P8 has some other new features, too, such as a nice arpeggiator (with latch), a loopable third envelope (try modulating envelope stages while it's looping!), much easier modulation of oscillator mix (you can set up a four way analog vector using the wheels!), and the whole "two Programs in one" thing, where each Program is really two Programs, and where the "Part B" can be stacked/layered, or split with Part A, or just used as an "alternate take" if you will (similar to the EX5 "Scenes", except Part B is a completely different Program). Hey, when stacked/layered, you have 4 analog osc, 2 filters, 2 amps, 6 env, 8 LFOs, 8 assignable mod source/destinations, 8 seq tracks, and 2 arps at your disposal! Analog bliss.
Bottom line is I ended up creating two full banks of Programs (256) for the P8, and I still have ideas I haven't tried.
The P8 is definitely a keeper for me. If you like real analog synths, you might like it a lot, too. I highly recommend playing one when you get a chance, very preferably in a decent listening environment that will allow you to evaluate the sound."
