In 1983, there were only two digital studios in Germany and Studio "N" belonged to Kraftwerk. Initially, we had some problems transferring our analog tapes to this SSL digital console. The com- puter room with the hard discs was tremendous. Everything was brand new and the technician was still learning how to operate everything. Dennis re- quested a professional horn player for the Eastern sounding parts. Charlie Mariano (he played with Gong, Stan Kenton, and Charles Mingus) showed up and played some Indian phrases which fit much better than the original Kurdish flutes. Almost all of the vocal parts were re-recorded in Cologne. For each mix down Dennis needed almost two days. When it was all over, Kraftwerk's technician wanted to kill Dennis. In the car ride back to Bremen I felt totally dead.
